First performance at the age of 9 without any training

Born on 23 April 1938 in Guntur district (Pallapatla) of Andhra Pradesh, Janaki’s father Sistala Sriramamurthy was an Ayurvedic doctor and teacher. His childhood was spent in Sircilla. Janaki Amma did not have any formal studies in classical music. He had learned only the basics of music from Nadaswaram maestro Pyidiswami. Despite this, at the age of just 9 he gave his first performance on stage. In the year 1959, she married V Ramprasad, who supported her like a shadow in her career. Ramprasad ji died of a heart attack in the year 1997.

60 years of career, starting with 6 languages ​​and thousands of songs

Even though Janaki Amma’s mother tongue was Telugu, she could speak and write many languages ​​including Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi very easily. He started his career in 1957 at the age of just 19 with the Tamil film ‘Vindhayin Vilayattu’. The amazing thing is that in his very first year he sang songs in 6 different languages. After ruling the music world for almost 60 years, he announced his retirement in 2016. However, for the love of her fans, she once again came in front of the mic in 2018 for the Tamil film ‘Pannadi’ and recorded her last song. For his unmatched singing, he won 4 National Film Awards and 33 State Film Awards from different states.

When the country’s third highest honor ‘Padma Bhushan’ was rejected

Janaki Amma was known not only for her excellent singing but also for her self-respect. In the year 2013, he took a decision which shocked the entire country. The government had selected him for the country’s third highest civilian award ‘Padma Bhushan’, but he flatly refused to accept it. He said that considering his long contribution to Indian music, he should have received the country’s biggest honor i.e. ‘Bharat Ratna’ long ago. There was a long delay in getting this honour.
