Rukmini Maitra Cast Opposite Akshay Kumar In Samuk: Bengali Actress Who Earlier Worked With Vidyut Jammwal

Bengali actress Rukmini Maitra is all set to make a big career move as the female lead opposite Akshay Kumar in the upcoming sci-fi action thriller Samuk. Maitra has gained recognition for her work in Bengali cinema, in the genres of romance, action, comedy, and period drama. Her casting introduces a familiar face from regional cinema to a big-budget Hindi film production, which marks a significant new chapter in her journey. Directed by Kanishk Varma and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, Samuk is being made as a pan-India big-budget theatrical project that will release in 2027.

Rukmini Maitra is an Indian actress and former model who works primarily in Bengali cinema. She initially worked in the modeling industry and became popular for her screen presence and fashion assignments before making a mark as an actor. Later, she ventured into the world of cinema, creating a portfolio of work that encompassed different genres.

Maitra has acted in Bengali films like Chaamp, Kabir, Password, Kishmish, Byomkesh O Durgo Rahasya and Boomerang. These projects helped her develop a fan following among the Bengali film audiences. Her performances allowed her to explore romance, thrillers, comedy and action-oriented stories.

One of her recent notable performances was in Binodiini, where she played legendary Bengali theater personality, Binodini Dasi. The part threw her into a period setting and called for a different kind of performance than the contemporary commercial films she had been making.

Maitra debuted as an actress with the Bengali film Chaamp (2017) opposite Dev. She then appeared in films like Kabir (2018), Password (2019) and Kishmish (2022) and slowly expanded her repertoire between commercial entertainers and thrillers.

Her dual role was complemented by her portrayal of an andro-humanoid character in Boomerang (2024). Her performance in Binodiini also reflected her interest in roles based on Bengali culture and history.

Rukmini made her Hindi film debut opposite Vidyut Jammwal in the 2021 film Sanak. She later made a cameo in Jammwal’s 2024 film Crakk.

Maitra will be seen opposite Akshay Kumar in Kanishk Varma directorial science-fiction action-survival thriller Samuk. Sunshine Pictures, the production banner, announced her casting on October 22. For Maitra, the project is an opportunity to reach out to audiences beyond Bengali cinema and work within a large-scale Hindi production.

Vineet Kumar Singh, Rajat Kapoor, Swanand Kirkire and Banita Sandhu are also part of the ensemble. The production of the film has drawn on international creative talent, including creature-effects designer Alec Gillis, who has worked on the Alien and Predator franchises.

The movie is slated to hit theatres in 2027, but no release date has been announced as yet.
