Security standoff lasted for 30 minutes in ‘Temple of Heaven’
Things became more tense at Beijing’s historic Temple of Heaven after Chinese security officials refused to allow a US Secret Service agent inside with a weapon.
The American side described it as part of the presidential security protocol, while Chinese officials cited local rules and demanded the surrender of weapons. The standoff, which lasted for about 30 minutes, brought the entire program to a halt. Eventually the press team was taken inside with the help of the second agent, but the first agent remained standing outside. This incident clearly indicated that the lack of trust between the two countries has now reached the security arrangements.
