Troubled by rebel candidates in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, political parties have heaved a sigh of relief. Monday was the last date for withdrawal of nominations. On the last day, a record number of rebels withdrew their names. According to the information, there were a total of 35 rebel candidates in the Mahayuti of BJP, Shinde faction’s Shiv Sena and NCP and there were 14 rebels in the Mahavikas Aghadi of Uddhav faction’s Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar faction’s NCP and Congress. It is claimed that a total of 49 rebels have withdrawn their names. Voting will be held in the state on November 20 while the results will be revealed on November 23.
At first the rebels were persuaded by the political parties. After this, on Sunday evening almost all the political parties issued instructions that if their rebel leaders do not withdraw their nominations, then strict action will be taken against them. The next day most of the rebels withdrew their nominations. The political parties have definitely got immediate relief from the nomination of the rebels, but who these leaders will benefit from and who will be harmed by not getting tickets will be known only on November 23.
The biggest name in this is that of former BJP MP Gopal Shetty. Gopal Shetty has decided not to contest the elections as an independent candidate and has withdrawn his nomination from Borivali seat this morning. BJP had given ticket to Sanjay Upadhyay from Borivali seat, due to which he was angry and filed his nomination on 29th October, the last day of nomination. He had said that he has taken this decision not for the sake of ticket, but because of the concern of the local workers. The workers were continuously being ignored. Congress’s Mukhtar Sheikh withdrew his nomination from Pune’s Kasba Peth assembly constituency and announced his support to the party’s official candidate Ravindra Dhangekar.
Sada Saravankar did not withdraw his name in Mahim
However, Mahim seat was such that there was a lot of pressure on Sada Sarvankar, who contested the elections on Shiv Sena Shinde’s ticket, to withdraw his name but he did not withdraw his name and he will face Amit Thackeray, son of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray. It cannot be called a rebellion but it can definitely be called a friendly competition because the relations between Eknath Shinde and Raj Thackeray are very good.
