‘Remarkable Power’: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Wins Praise After RR Beat PBKS

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar reserved special praise for Rajasthan Royals youngster Vaibhav Suryavanshi after the side ended Punjab Kings’ unbeaten run with a six-wicket victory in their IPL 2026 clash at Mullanpur.

Speaking on Star Sports’ ‘Amul Cricket Live’, Gavaskar highlighted how Suryavanshi’s fearless approach and clean striking continue to redefine modern T20 batting, particularly in an era where massive run chases are becoming increasingly common.

Punjab Kings had entered the contest unbeaten, but Rajasthan Royals chased down the target confidently, with their young batting core playing a decisive role.

Gavaskar highlights fearless approach of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Sunil Gavaskar focused heavily on Sooryavanshi’s natural ability and fearless mindset, pointing out how the youngster’s approach mirrors the modern trend of aggressive batting.

“He made excellent use of the field and picked the line beautifully. The way he strikes the ball with such ease and power is remarkable. What stands out is how unfazed he looks. That’s often the advantage of youth. You play without fear, without worrying about the opposition, and just back your natural game.”

Sooryavanshi has quickly emerged as one of the breakout stars of IPL 2026, earning attention for his clean hitting and ability to score quickly against quality bowling attacks.

His performances have also coincided with a broader shift in IPL batting trends, where teams are now chasing totals once considered out of reach.

Big run chases becoming the new norm in IPL

Gavaskar also reflected on how recent high-scoring games have changed the mindset of teams across the league.

“It was similar to what RCB did to GT, or PBKS did to DC, when they chased 260-plus so comfortably. Once one team does that, others start believing they can do it as well, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing. Since then, we’ve had multiple 200-plus chases, and now even 220-plus totals are being chased with balls to spare. It shows how strongly teams believe that no target, even 220 or 240, is beyond reach.”

This trend has been evident throughout IPL 2026, with multiple matches featuring successful chases of totals above 200, highlighting the evolution of batting depth and power-hitting.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s controlled aggression key to RR success

Former India wicketkeeper Aditya Tare also praised Yashasvi Jaiswal’s composure and shot selection, especially during high-pressure chases.

“They set the chase up really well, scoring 80-plus in the Powerplay. The opening partnership was crucial, especially when chasing a total in the 220 range. Yashasvi’s biggest strength is control, his cricketing shots are largely risk-free, particularly through the covers and point. That’s what makes him so consistent across formats.”

Jaiswal’s role in stabilising the innings alongside aggressive stroke play from younger players like Sooryavanshi has been a major factor in Rajasthan Royals’ success this season.

Gavaskar previews crucial MI vs SRH clash

Gavaskar also turned his attention to the upcoming Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match, highlighting the pressure on Mumbai Indians to deliver consistent results.

“MI now need to win every game from here, and they have the capability to do that. It’s just about things clicking for them. The recent loss, especially getting bowled out for 100-odd, was disappointing. Such heavy defeats can hurt them later, particularly in a tight race for the fourth playoff spot.”

With the playoff race tightening, every result in the coming fixtures could play a decisive role in shaping the final standings.
