Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon has marked 24 years of Sweet Home Alabama, reflecting on the film’s impact on her career and expressing gratitude to the late music legend Dolly Parton for allowing one of her songs to feature on the soundtrack.
Witherspoon shared the anniversary post on Instagram on Sunday, uploading a series of stills from the 2002 romantic comedy featuring her co-stars as well as behind-the-scenes moments from the production.
“I’m in complete shock that the time has flown by,” Witherspoon wrote while recalling the film’s release and the experience of working with Patrick Dempsey, Josh Lucas, Candice Bergen, Melanie Lynskey and Jean Smart, along with writer-director Andy Tennant.
She also highlighted Parton’s contribution to the film, writing that it “really touched my heart” that the singer allowed the production to use one of her songs on the soundtrack.
Witherspoon said the film has continued to resonate with audiences, adding that people have approached her over the years to tell her it is their favourite film of hers. She ended the post by asking fans to share their favourite scene.
Released in 2002, Sweet Home Alabama stars Witherspoon as Melanie Carmichael, a successful New York fashion designer engaged to Andrew Hennings, played by Dempsey. Before marrying him, Melanie returns to Alabama to divorce Jake Perry, played by Lucas, whom she secretly married as a teenager.
Her return forces Melanie to confront the relationship and life she left behind while building a new identity in New York. The film contrasts Manhattan’s affluent social world with Alabama’s small-town setting while exploring themes of ambition, identity, marriage and belonging.
Directed by Tennant, the film became a commercial success, earning more than $180 million worldwide and further establishing Witherspoon as a leading star of romantic comedies.
