Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is making headlines for the wrong reasons again. This time, it’s not for a controversial social media post but for legal trouble. The director is facing a financial dispute over pending dues with a production house. A public notice has been issued, seeking the recovery of Rs 29.67 crore in alleged outstanding dues. The company has also warned industry stakeholders against working with the Satya director without prior approval. RGV is yet to address the matter, but the dispute reportedly dates back to an agreement from April 2010.
Ram Gopal Varma Faces Legal Trouble
Eclatant Films Private Limited has issued a legal notice to ,demanding payment of Rs 29,67,64,000 in outstanding dues as of October 11, including Rs 11,38,92,000 in interest. According to the official statement, the amount is owed under an agreement dated April 10, 2010, which was also confirmed by an order passed by the Bombay High Court on April 17, 2013.
The production house has asked Varma to clear the dues by October 30, 2026, warning that failure to do so would prompt it to enforce its contractual lien over his shares, rights, interests, revenues and exploitation rights in the films and projects covered by the agreement. Eclatant Films further stated that the agreement requires Varma to obtain its prior written No-Objection Certificate (NOC) before associating with third parties or undertaking activities related to film production, co-production, direction or writing until the outstanding amount is fully paid.
The notice also cautioned individuals and entities seeking to acquire, license, distribute, broadcast, stream or otherwise exploit rights related to the projects covered by the agreement to obtain the required NOC before proceeding with any transaction. It warned, “Any person or entity proceeding with any such transaction despite notice of Eclatant’s contractual rights and claims shall do so at its own risk and subject to Eclatant’s rights and remedies in law and under the Agreement and Order, including its rights to seek injunction, recovery, enforcement of its lien/security rights and without prejudice to any and all other reliefs available in law to protect and enforce its contractual and legal rights.”
It remains unclear how the dispute will affect Varma’s upcoming projects. The filmmaker is currently working on his next film, starring Harshvardhan Rane in the lead role. The film is slated for release next year.
