The Supreme Court has canceled the bail of wife Sonam, accused of murdering her husband Raja Raghuvanshi on their honeymoon. Raja’s mother Uma Raghuvanshi welcomed the verdict, saying ‘truth has prevailed’ and giving her hope for justice. Sonam has been ordered to surrender within two weeks.
Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [भारत]July 23 (ANI): Raja Raghuvanshi’s mother Uma Raghuvanshi on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision canceling the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the main accused in the alleged murder of her husband during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. He said that “the truth has prevailed” and expressed hope that his son would eventually get complete justice.
Expressing relief over the apex court order, Uma Raghuvanshi said the judgment has restored her faith in the judicial process. He told ANI, “I am satisfied. Today I feel very good in my heart that my son has got justice, and the truth has prevailed. A mother’s faith has won. The hope with which a mother waited for the Supreme Court – that hope has been rekindled today, and a mother’s faith has been restored… The sentence is yet to be delivered. Going forward, my son will definitely get complete justice as a mother has faith, and in the future too the truth will prevail.”
‘Mother’s faith won, truth won’
He further said that he had full confidence in the Supreme Court and insisted that King was innocent. He said, “The verdict given by the Supreme Court is right, and whatever happens next will be good, because truth must prevail. My son was innocent; my king was not at fault.”
Brothers demand strict punishment and fast-track trial
Raja Raghuvanshi’s brother, Sachin Raghuvanshi, thanked the Meghalaya government for challenging the bail order before the Supreme Court and praised Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for presenting the case. Sachin said, “I express my whole-hearted gratitude to the Meghalaya government and the Shillong government. They realized the mistake on their part in this matter… Going all the way to the Supreme Court, they fought to get justice for this decision. Tushar Mehta ji understood this matter wholeheartedly.”
Demanding strict punishment for the accused, she said, “Today, after five months, the justice we have got – all we want is that at least, she should be given life imprisonment till her last breath… Why she was given two weeks’ time to surrender, we don’t know. But she (Sonam) has to surrender.”
Another brother of Raja, Vipin Raghuvanshi, also welcomed the order, saying it was a victory for truth. He said, “Today the Supreme Court has canceled the bail of Sonam Raghuvanshi… Sonam Raghuvanshi will have to surrender within two weeks. Because today truth has won and lies have been defeated.”
Vipin also demanded a fast-track trial and said, “I just want that their trial should be conducted on a fast-track basis and the accused should be punished as soon as possible…Narco test investigation is very important because there are facts which were hidden, they can come out.”
Why did the Supreme Court cancel the bail?
The Supreme Court on Thursday canceled the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, observing that continuing her release at this stage could hamper the ongoing trial. A bench of Justices MM Sundaresh and PB Varale quashed the bail orders passed in his favor and directed him to surrender within two weeks.
The court also said that if the trial is not completed within six months, she will be free to seek bail again. The Meghalaya government had challenged the bail order arguing that the allegations against Sonam were serious.
According to the prosecution, she had conspired with three accomplices to murder her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya after marriage. The top court held that the lower courts had erred in granting bail considering the seriousness of the charges and the stage of the trial. (ANI)
