The discussion of the Waqf Board and its properties has once again intensified amid the call of amending the Waqf Act in the country’s Parliament. This discussion is not happening spontaneously. At present, the Waqf Board is the third major zamindar institution with more than 8 lakh acres of properties. In Uttar Pradesh, even Raj Bhavan is claimed to be built on the land of Waqf. The Shia Waqf Board in Uttar Pradesh has only 15 thousand 386 properties, but Sunni Board has more than 2 lakh 10 thousand 239 properties. What is Waqf property

If a person belonging to the Muslim community has no children, after his death, his property becomes of Waqf. Similarly, some people donate their property to Waqf Board while alive. Actually the word Waqf is made up of Arabic language Wakufa. It means Allah’s name. Accordingly, Allah is the owner of Waqf’s properties and these properties are used in the work of Allah. Mosques, madrasas, cemeteries, Idgahs and tomb etc. can be built on this property.

Waqf Act came in 1954

After independence, the Waqf Act was first introduced in the country in 1954. Its purpose was to control the lands of Waqf and stop their misuse. However, after continuous disputes, the government of Uttar Pradesh conducted a survey of non-recognized madrasas two years ago. In this sequence, the public supports recorded in Waqf are being reviewed. At the same time, the Central Government has prepared the Waqf Amendment Act and soon the concerned bill is going to be introduced in the House.
