Punjabi singer Yashinder Kaur found dead in Neelon Canal; main accused escapes to Canada

New Delhi: The body of Punjabi singer Inder Kaur, also known as Yashinder Kaur was recovered from the Neelon Canal near Ludhiana on Tuesday nearly a week after she went missing. Police said the 29-year-old singer had allegedly been abducted at gunpoint on May 13 while she had gone out to buy groceries in her Ford Figo car.

Inder kaur family identified the body at Civil Hospital in Samrala where it was later sent for postmortem examination. The recovery has triggered outrage among family members, who had been demanding strict action since the singer disappeared.

According to the complaint filed by her brother, Jotinder Singh, Inder had left home around 8.30 pm on May 13 but never returned. When the family failed to contact her, they began searching and later approached the police.

FIR registered after family complaint

Police had registered an FIR on May 15 against Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukha, a resident of Bhalur village in Moga district, along with his associate Karamjit Singh and other unidentified men. The family alleged that Sukhwinder had been pressuring Inder to marry him despite already being married and having children.

Jotinder Singh told police that the two became acquainted through Instagram nearly three years ago. However, Inder reportedly distanced herself after learning about his family background and refused his marriage proposal.

The family accused Sukhwinder and his associates of abducting the singer at gunpoint before killing her. They also claimed that the accused fled to Canada soon after the crime.

Police probe underway

ACP Inderjit Singh said the initial investigation suggests that Sukhwinder allegedly shot Inder before dumping both her body and car into the canal. Her vehicle had already been recovered from the same canal a few days earlier.

Police confirmed that two accused have been arrested so far, while efforts are underway to trace others linked to the case. Investigators are also examining the possibility that the murder was planned in advance.

SHO Balbir Singh of Jamalpur police station said the police were informed about a body floating in the canal, following which a team reached the spot and called the family for identification.

The investigation is ongoing  and police say all angles related to the alleged kidnapping, forced marriage pressure and murder are being examined.
