Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday held a meeting with the seven-member committee constituted to examine amendments to the Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satikar (Amendment) Act, 2026.
The meeting was held at Mann’s official residence in Chandigarh and lasted around two hours. The chief minister discussed the proposed amendments in detail with the committee members.
The panel comprises former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh, Damdami Taksal chief Sant Harnam Singh Khalsa, Sant Baba Sewa Singh of Rampur Khera, retired Justice Jaspal Singh, retired Justice Gurbir Singh, former IPS officer and former Punjab Public Service Commission chairman Jatinder Singh Aulakh, and advocate Preet Inder Pal Singh.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Giani Raghbir Singh said the members had interacted and introduced themselves during the meeting. He said discussions focused on how the objections raised by the Akal Takht could be addressed, adding that the committee would hold further deliberations and submit its report soon.
Sant Baba Sewa Singh said the new legislation had been prepared keeping the previous law in mind and that all proposed amendments would be examined in detail.
The Punjab government had passed the Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satikar (Amendment) Act, 2026 in the state Assembly with the stated objective of strengthening legal provisions related to sacrilege cases. The Akal Takht Jathedar had subsequently raised objections to certain provisions, following which the Punjab government constituted the seven-member committee to examine the proposed amendments.
