A 19-year-old female cricketer allegedly committed suicide in Puducherry. She was disappointed at not being selected in the state T20 team. This incident highlights the immense pressure that exists on young athletes.
A budding female cricketer in Puducherry allegedly committed suicide after she was denied a place in the state women’s T20 team after the recent selection trials. Cricket Association of Pondicherry (CAP) had organized the selection trials for the women’s T20 team at the CAP ground in Thutipet in April this year.
These selection trials were for the upcoming domestic season, in which players compete for a place in the Puducherry team participating in BCCI tournaments. However, out of the large number of players participating in the trials, only a few players are selected on the basis of their performance. Since a large number of players try their luck in these trials, the competition to make it to the final team is very tough. Players who do not make it to the final team often feel disappointed, as opportunities at the domestic level are limited and very competitive.
