Obesity problem is increasing rapidly in the country

According to the National Family Health Survey-6 (NFHS-6) released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Central Government, the problem of obesity is increasing among adults in India. The survey found that the rate of overweight or obesity has increased in men and women between 15 and 49 years in the last five years. This increase of 4.4 percent has been seen in men and 6.7 percent increase in women. While in the year 2019-21, 24 percent women were overweight or obese, this figure has increased to 30.7 percent in 2023-24. This means that almost one out of every three women is now struggling with the problem of overweight or obesity.

So many lakh families were included in the survey

This survey was conducted by the Health Ministry during the year 2023-24, in which Mumbai-based International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) was made the nodal agency. Under the survey, about 6.79 lakh families were included in 715 districts of all the states and union territories of the country except Manipur. The worrying thing is that more urban people are becoming victims of obesity. In urban areas, 42.8 percent women are overweight or obese, while in rural areas this figure is 25.5 percent. Experts believe that the reasons for this could be changing lifestyle, increasing consumption of junk food and decrease in physical activity.

The risk of high blood sugar is increasing

Not only obesity but the risk of diabetes is also increasing. The survey states that the percentage of men aged 15 years and above having high or very high blood sugar (more than 140 mg/dl) and taking medicines to control it has increased from 15.6 percent in 2019-21 to 20.9 percent in 2023-24. Where the number of women suffering from obesity is increasing. At the same time, the percentage of men in blood sugar is increasing. It has been told in the survey that now the cases of blood sugar are increasing among women as compared to earlier. Especially among urban women. However, they are still less than men.
