TMC Questions Counting Process and EVM: After BJP’s big victory in West Bengal Elections 2026, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee raised questions on the counting process and EVM data. Know how Mamata’s 15 year old government ended and what are the major reasons behind the entire controversy.
The politics of West Bengal took a big turn on May 4. The fort of Trinamool Congress, which was in power for a long time, collapsed and Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the biggest force. This change not only changed the government, but also changed the political direction of the state and the center of debate. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has given a public response on the election results for the first time, in which while he said to accept the public’s decision, he also raised serious questions on the election process.
“Public decision accepted, but questions on process”
Abhishek Banerjee said that in a democracy, the public’s decision is supreme and everyone should accept it. But he also pointed to unusual circumstances regarding the vote counting process. He says that while in the 2021 elections, about 90% counting was completed within 8–9 hours, this time only 6–8 rounds of counting could be done in the same time. Is this difference just a technical delay or there is some other reason behind it, this question is now becoming the center of political debate.

Warning to counting agents and appeal for patience
Abhishek Banerjee clearly told his party workers and counting agents that they should not leave the counting center under any circumstances. He alleged that at many places the results are not being shared with the media, due to which questions are being raised on transparency. Giving the example of Bardhaman South seat, he said that despite the victory, recount is being conducted there, which further increases the suspicion.
Big allegation on EVM and data matching
The most serious allegation came from Kalyani area, where according to Abhishek Banerjee, there are at least 8 EVMs in which the data of the control unit is not matching with Form 17C. Such discrepancy between EVM data and official documents directly raises questions on the credibility of the election process. However, an official response from the Election Commission is awaited.
BJP’s strategic victory: breach in TMC’s stronghold
The biggest political signal in this election is that the BJP took lead in areas which were considered Trinamool’s strongholds. The success of BJP in areas like Malda, Murshidabad and North Bengal has made it clear that the political equations in the state are changing rapidly. The end of Mamata Banerjee’s government, which was in power for 15 years, is not just being considered an electoral defeat but also a sign of a major change in public opinion.
Controversy and political tension over counting center
Controversy broke out at Hastings Counting Center when Abhishek Banerjee reached there and the Election Commission asked him to leave as he was not a candidate for that seat. On the other hand, Trinamool alleged that there is interference in the counting process and a situation like “looting the counting centre” is being created. This rhetoric shows that political tension is at its peak along with the election results.
What next? Speculation of meeting the Governor
According to sources, Mamata Banerjee may meet the Governor soon. This meeting is considered important regarding the future political strategy and the process of transfer of power.
New Bengal amidst victory, defeat and questions
This election of West Bengal is not just a story of change of power. This is a juncture where democratic process, transparency and political trust are being debated simultaneously. On one side there is the historic victory of BJP and on the other side there are serious allegations by Trinamool Congress. The role of the Election Commission, investigation and political reactions in the coming days will decide which direction this controversy takes. At present it is certain that the politics of Bengal will no longer be the same as before.
