Pooja Rules: How should worship be done, standing or sitting? These rules are mentioned in the scriptures

right way to worship

Pooja Guide: Worship and religious rituals have special importance in Sanatan Dharma. People worship God every day in their home temple or in some outside temple. However, while performing puja, there is often a dilemma in the mind, whether to perform the puja while standing or sitting in front of the deity? Many times, in a hurry, we stand and fold our hands and sometimes when we have time, we sit comfortably, but do you know that some rules for worshiping have been mentioned in the scriptures and Puranas? Let us know what are the correct rules of worship according to the scriptures?

According to religious beliefs and scriptures, it is best to sit on a seat while performing puja. While worshiping, one should not sit directly on the ground, but should sit on cotton cloth, mat or blanket. It is believed that by doing puja while sitting on the asana, both the mind and body remain stable, hence it is advisable to sit on the asana while doing daily puja, chanting, meditation and recitation.

Under what circumstances should one worship while standing?

This does not mean that worshiping while standing is wrong or prohibited. Standing and worshiping in many religious rituals is a part of Sanatan tradition. During the Aarti in the temple, at the time of darshan of the Lord, at the time of burning incense sticks or during any special Yagya-Aradhana, the devotees stand and worship. Apart from this, if there is no place to sit or there is too much crowd, then God can be remembered or worshiped while standing.

Importance of right place of worship

In the scriptures, the use of right posture while worshiping has been said to be very important. It is believed that sitting on the right posture maintains the balance of body strength and positive energy. As a result, the mind becomes directly absorbed in devotion to God without wandering here and there. This is the reason that since ancient times, saints and sages have been using special asanas during meditation.

Can elderly or sick people worship while standing?

If a person has difficulty in sitting on the ground, or is old or physically ill, then he can worship God standing or sitting on a chair as per his convenience. Religious beliefs say that God gives more importance to the devotion, respect and dedication of the devotee’s heart than external ostentation or rules, hence it is not wrong to make some changes in the method of worship for health reasons.

From a spiritual point of view, the main purpose of puja is to express love, faith and devotion towards God. If the mind is disturbed and wandering, then performing puja merely for the sake of following the rules will not be completely fruitful. On the other hand, if even a small prayer is offered to God with a pure and pure heart without following mechanical rules, then it is also considered extremely fruitful.
