This statement of Mahua, one of the few leaders who stood by Mamata Banerjee, is giving rise to new speculations in Bengal politics. He said that personally he has a very good relationship with Suvendu Adhikari. When both of them were in Trinamool Congress, Suvendu had helped him a lot. Referring to the most difficult phase of his political career, Mahua told how Suvendu had supported him. Mahua revealed, “When I did not get the ticket in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, I kept crying the whole night. At that time, it was only Suvendu Adhikari who consoled me and gave me courage.”

Mahua narrated another incident from the 2016 Bengal Assembly elections, when he contested for the first time from Karimpur. She said, “At that time I was new to politics and no big TMC leader had come to campaign for me. But it was Suvendu Adhikari who conducted my first election rally. Even today if you see the pictures of that rally, only me and Suvendu will be seen in it.” Let us tell you that after differences with Mamata in 2020, Suvendu left TMC and joined BJP.

This statement of Mahua has come at a time when rebel MLAs under the leadership of Ritabrata Banerjee are trying to control the party. The rebel camp has removed Mamata from the post of party president and Abhishek Banerjee from the post of general secretary. He has also approached the Election Commission for the party name and election symbol. The rebels claim that they have the support of 60 out of 80 TMC MLAs. Senior leaders like Arup Biswas and Firhad Hakim, who were staunch Mamata loyalists, are also now with the rebel group.

In the interview, Mahua Moitra also talked about the difference between BJP and Trinamool Congress. He said that BJP has a strong cadre system and they work on a fixed ideology. BJP is not dependent on just one person. However, Mahua rejected the reports that Trinamool Congress is going to merge with Congress. As of now, there are no signs of Mahua leaving the party, but in the current political situation, remembering his old friendship with Suvendu has become a big political talking point in Bengal.
