Indonesia hosted a grand welcome ceremony for PM Modi, from cavalry processions to vibrant traditional cultural performances. PM Modi is currently on the first leg of his three-nation diplomatic visit.

The Prime Minister arrived in Indonesia on Monday, where Indonesian military fighter jets escorted his plane as it entered the country’s airspace. They were formally welcomed by President Prabowo on the tarmac and were greeted with a traditional cultural dance performance.

Focus on strategic partnership and defense cooperation

The visit, from July 6-8, at the personal invitation of President Prabowo, is PM Modi’s fourth visit to the South-East Asian archipelago. Importantly, this is the first bilateral visit after both countries formally elevated their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2018.

The two leaders are scheduled to hold wide-ranging bilateral talks to review the entire gamut of India-Indonesia relations and explore ways to deepen cooperation in defence, trade, maritime security, critical minerals, healthcare and emerging technologies. Defense and maritime coordination are expected to top the agenda during Tuesday’s discussions. Security ties between New Delhi and Jakarta have grown steadily in recent years, driven by regular high-level exchanges, joint military exercises, defense industry cooperation and enhanced maritime coordination.

Furthermore, the high-level dialogue is expected to advance cooperation under India’s Vision for Oceans (MAHASAGAR), an institutional framework aimed at promoting security, stability and inclusive growth in the Indo-Pacific. Ahead of his visit, PM Modi had stressed that the diplomatic visit to the three countries would significantly strengthen India’s strategic presence in the region. “My visit to Indonesia and Australia in the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean respectively, followed by New Zealand, will further strengthen India’s Act East Policy, Ocean Vision, as well as our vision towards a free and open Indo-Pacific,” he said.

Cultural and economic relations will be strengthened

During his stay, PM Modi will interact with members of the Indian expatriate community. He will also accompany President Prabowo to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Prambanan Temple Complex, which he had earlier described as a symbol of the deep civilizational ties between India and Indonesia.

During this state visit, a lot of attention will also be paid to economic coordination. Indonesia is India’s second largest trading partner within the ASEAN bloc, with bilateral trade set to reach US$24.78 billion in fiscal year 2025-26. Currently, more than 130 Indian companies have active investments in Indonesia, spanning sectors such as infrastructure, energy, manufacturing and technology.

Resource security is also another important pillar of bilateral talks. Indonesia has about 21 percent of the world’s nickel reserves and is one of the leading global producers of bauxite, copper and tin, making the country an essential partner for India’s supply chain resilience and clean energy ambitions.

After concluding his programs in Indonesia, PM Modi will travel to Australia and New Zealand to complete his ongoing diplomatic visit. (ANI)
