A financial professional named Robert Sterling shared a story on X (formerly Twitter), which is now going viral. In this story, a unique example of honesty, responsibility and calm leadership even in difficult situations was seen. According to Sterling, passengers were preparing to board a flight to Atlanta when the pilot of the incoming flight suddenly took over the gate microphone.
The pilot announced, “Guys, I’ve been doing this for a long time. Flying these jets is easy. The hard part is standing in front of 130 people and telling them your flight is delayed.” According to Sterling, on hearing this, the people sitting in the gate area started murmuring in disappointment. He told that many passengers were going to take connecting flights from Atlanta, so this delay could have spoiled their entire travel plans.
But instead of citing operational problems or making vague excuses, the pilot clearly explained the real reason for the delay…
“We encountered a minor technical glitch during our landing. I’m not the pilot of your next flight, but I don’t think this jet is safe to fly until it’s thoroughly checked by a mechanical team,” he said. The pilot also defended the gate staff standing near him.
He told the passengers, “There is no fault of the agents in this. Please behave well with them. I have taken this decision.” He also said that he is doing this only because it is in everyone’s interest.
As soon as the pilot put down the mike and picked up his luggage, all the passengers started clapping for him, despite their disrupted schedules. “All of this happened because the pilot took responsibility for his decisions, spoke to people with complete transparency and respect, and made clear why the delay was necessary,” Sterling wrote.
