Relief news has come from the international market. The important trade route ‘Strait of Hormuz’ has reopened after the 60-day ceasefire deal between America and Iran was confirmed. This geopolitical turmoil has had a direct impact on crude oil prices. Crude oil in the global market has fallen to its lowest level in several months. However, Indian customers do not seem to be getting any direct benefit from this big decline at present. The country’s government oil companies have not given any relief in the prices of petrol and diesel on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Fuel prices across the country have remained the same since May 25.
Companies want to compensate for the losses
Even though the price of crude oil has fallen in the global market, there is peace in the domestic market. Since the start of the Iran war, there was a huge jump of about 50 percent in the prices of crude oil. Due to this unexpected surge, government oil companies were facing huge losses of about Rs 750 crore daily on the sale of petrol, diesel, LPG and jet fuel. Now that crude has become cheaper due to the US-Iran reconciliation, the first priority of the companies is to compensate for their losses.
Inflation broke out in May
The burden of oil inflation on the common man’s pocket had increased significantly last month itself. As soon as the assembly elections of five states were over, the oil companies shocked the general public four times in just 11 days. This increase started on May 15 when petrol became costlier by Rs 3 and diesel by Rs 3.29. Immediately after this, on May 19, the prices of petrol and diesel increased by 87 paise and 91 paise respectively. The companies continued the same trend on May 23 also. Finally, on May 25, the price of petrol was increased by Rs 2.61 and that of diesel by Rs 2.71. There has been no change in prices since that day.
