What do experts say?
South African veterinarian and animal health educator Dr. Aamir Anwari, known as Amir the Vet on social media, is making people aware these days about the joint problems that pet dogs face as they age. He told that by taking proper care and adopting some important habits, the joint health of dogs can be kept better for a long time.
Keep dogs’ weight under control
Dr. Aamir Anwari explains that it is very important to control the weight of dogs to keep their joints healthy as they grow older. Because if a dog becomes even a little overweight, it puts extra pressure on its joints, due to which the wear and tear of the joints can increase rapidly over time.
Regular exercise is very important
Dr. Anwari says that continuous and balance exercise is considered very beneficial for the joint health of dogs. In such a situation, low-impact activity like light walk or swimming at fixed time every day keeps their body active and helps in strengthening the joints.
Make small changes in the home environment
Some small changes at home can prove to be very helpful in maintaining good joint health of dogs. Dogs are more prone to slipping on slippery tiles or smooth floors, which can put extra pressure on their joints. In such a situation, laying carpets or rugs in the house is beneficial. So that they can get good grip while walking.
Provide joint support nutrients in time
Dr. Aamir believes that giving joint support supplements to dogs should be started from the time they do not show any kind of problem. That means it is more beneficial to use them as a prevention rather than a treatment. He advised to give a combination of Omega-3 supplement and joint support formula.
