A Google Software Development Engineer, Shalini, has challenged the glamorous image of tech company life portrayed in “day in the life” videos. She noted that perks like the PlayStation room and gym at her Google office are often empty, while employees are actually working hard and look stressed.=

Employees at large tech companies frequently post “day in the life” videos on social media, showcasing their vibrant workspaces, PlayStation rooms, gyms, and opulent benefits. However, a Google employee has now questioned the image these viral films present, claiming that they hardly depict the hard labour that goes on behind the scenes.

Shalini, a Google Software Development Engineer, recently saw some of the most talked-about facilities within a Google workplace and offered her thoughts on X. Despite their prominence in social media clips, she claimed that the gym and PlayStation area were both mostly deserted.

“Recently went to the PlayStation room and gym at the Google office. Both were almost empty. What I actually saw? People working like crazy. Some even looked stressed,” she wrote.

Shalini added that many of the viral “day in the life” videos fail to reflect the reality of working at a tech giant. “Those reels where it looks like everyone is just playing games and chilling all day? Most are either from the first few days after joining or just shot for the content. The perks are real, but so is the workload,” she said.

Concluding her post with a disclaimer, she clarified, “All thoughts are my personal, I am not speaking on behalf of Google.”

Internet Reacts

The post immediately gained notice on the internet, with many claiming that viral workplace films frequently omit the hard hours and stress that workers endure.

“Well, if they spent time playing and all it is compensated by working in the night,” one commenter said.

“Social media also highlights the good parts and forgets to show the parts where people actually work up to that point,” commented another.

“Yeah definitely, these things are to refresh yourself. There would definitely be work load, who cares about playstation and games, I care about the compensation,” wrote a third user.
