According to the legend, Mother Parvati entrusted the responsibility of guarding her gate to Lord Ganesha and left. Mahadev was not present there at that time. Ganesh ji was completely following his mother’s orders. After some time, Shiv ji reached there and started going inside the door, but Ganesh ji stopped him from doing so. Ganesh ji did not recognize Lord Shiva.
Ganesh ji told Mahadev that no one can go inside without his mother’s permission. Lord Shiva felt bad about this. Then gradually the dispute between the two increased. Lord Shiva’s followers and gods started trying to convince Ganesh ji, but Ganesh ji remained firm on his point. Here Lord Shiva’s anger increased and finally he cut off the head of Lord Ganesha with his trident.
Lord Shiva decided to sacrifice his life
When Mother Parvati came to know about this, she became very angry and sad. At that time his anger had put the whole world in trouble. The gods requested Lord Shiva to handle the situation. Then Lord Shiva realized his mistake and decided to give life to Lord Ganesha. Lord Shiva asked his followers to bring the head of the first living being sleeping with its head towards the north.
The Ganas found a baby elephant sleeping with its head towards the north. The Gana came to Mahadev with the head of the baby elephant. After this Lord Shiva gave new life to Lord Ganesha. He was also given the boon of being the first to be worshiped among all the gods. From then onwards Lord Ganesha started being worshiped first.
