Story of Padmini Ekadashi fast
In Tretayuga, a king named Kartavirya ruled in Mahishmati city. He had a hundred queens, but he could not get a suitable son from anyone. As per the wish of his son, the king performed many yagyas and religious rituals, but did not get any benefit. At last the king decided to perform severe penance and went to Gandhamadan mountain with his wife Pramada.

The king and queen performed hard penance there for ten thousand years, but God was not pleased. Due to penance the king’s body became very weak. Seeing this, Queen Pramada became sad and asked Mahasati Anasuya the reason for this. Then Goddess Anasuya told that Padmini Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha and Param Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha falling in Adhik month are very auspicious. By observing these fasts with devotion and rituals, Lord Vishnu becomes pleased and fulfills the wishes.
On the advice of Goddess Anasuya, Queen Pramada observed a fast on Padmini Ekadashi and remained awake throughout the night. Lord Vishnu was extremely pleased with the queen’s devotion and asked her to ask for a boon. The queen asked for the blessing of a son for her husband. Then Lord Vishnu blessed the king to have a son who would be invincible against gods, demons and humans.
After some time, a great son named Kartavirya Arjun was born to the king. He was very mighty and powerful. He had also defeated a powerful king like Ravana in the war and taken him captive. Thus, due to the effect of Padmini Ekadashi fast, the king was blessed with a great son.
