Padmini Ekadashi Fast 2026: Padmini Ekadashi fast has special significance in Hindu religion, because it does not fall on ordinary days, but in Malmas i.e. Purushottam month. According to religious beliefs, by worshiping as per rituals and observing fast on this day, one gets immense blessings from Lord Vishnu as well as Goddess Lakshmi. But, it is clearly stated in the scriptures that until this day Padmini Ekadashi This fast is not considered complete unless the Mahavrat Katha is recited. Let us know what is that mythological story without which this Mahavrat is considered incomplete. According to Udaya Tithi, the fast of Padmini Ekadashi is being observed on 27th May.
What is the mythological story of Padmini Ekadashi?
According to the legend, in Tretayuga, a mighty and pious king named Kartavirya ruled in Mahishmati city. The king had no dearth of wealth, glory and power. He had thousands of queens, but despite having so much prosperity, he was suffering from a lot of pain. The king had no children. King Kartavirya and his chief queen Padmini were always sad due to being deprived of the happiness of children. The king performed many yagyas to get a son, gave donations to Brahmins, performed penance and worship, but did not get any results. Time passed and his worries increased.

When every attempt failed, King Kartavirya decided to leave his kingdom and comforts and go to the forest and perform rigorous penance. Queen Padmini also went to the forest with her husband. Both of them worshiped Lord Vishnu rigorously for years. It is said that due to prolonged penance, the king’s body became extremely weak, but still he did not receive the blessings of God. Seeing such condition of her husband, Queen Padmini became very worried. Then he went to the ashram of the great devoted woman Anasuya ji and asked her for a solution.
Importance of Padmini Ekadashi fast
Queen Padmini narrated all her sorrows to Mother Anasuya. Then Mother Anasuya advised him to fast on Padmini Ekadashi falling in the Shukla Paksha of Adhikamas. He said that this fast is very rare and impressive. If this fast is observed with devotion and regularly, then Lord Vishnu becomes pleased and fulfills the wish. As per the advice of Mata Anasuya, Queen Padmini observed the fast of Padmini Ekadashi with full rituals. He meditated on Lord Vishnu throughout the day, performed bhajans and kirtans and also kept vigil at night.
Lord Vishnu gave a boon
Lord Vishnu was very pleased with Queen Padmini’s true devotion and rigorous fast. God appeared and asked him to ask for a boon. Then the queen expressed her desire to have a child. Lord Vishnu blessed him with a bright and mighty son. After some time, Queen Padmini gave birth to a son, who was named Kartavirya Arjun. Later, the same Kartavirya Arjun became a great warrior and he even defeated a powerful king like Ravana in the war.
Importance of Padmini Ekadashi fast
According to religious beliefs, fasting on Padmini Ekadashi destroys all the sins of a person and brings happiness and peace in life. This fast is considered especially fruitful for couples who wish to have a child. Apart from this, this fast is also considered to remove financial crisis, mental stress and family problems. It is said that by worshiping Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi on this day, happiness and prosperity reside in the house and the person ultimately attains salvation.
