Objecting to the headline used in a recent report in an American newspaper, the Indian Embassy in the United States described the terminology as “misleading and inaccurate”. “There is no Pakistani Kashmir, only Pakistan-occupied Kashmir,” the embassy said in a post on Twitter. “Misleading and inaccurate headline by @nytimes. There is no Pakistani Kashmir, only Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were, are and will always be integral and inalienable parts of India. Reiterating New Delhi’s earlier stance, the diplomatic mission said the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh “will always remain integral and inseparable parts of India”. The embassy also accused Islamabad of illegally occupying parts of these areas and said Pakistan continues to “use violence against the occupied people”.

India’s response came after a report by The New York Times covering the recent unrest and local elections in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The violence broke out in Mirpur after a clash between security forces and members of the Joint Awami Action Committee, a civil rights organization protesting against alleged police excesses, the newspaper reported.
According to the American newspaper, at least two people were shot dead in the recent confrontation. The report also highlighted the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan’s demand for an impartial investigation into these deadly incidents.
The New York Times said weeks of unrest had led to several deaths and disrupted electoral processes across the region. It also noted claims by the Joint Awami Action Committee that several of its members were killed in police encounters, while clarifying that such claims could not be independently verified or officially confirmed.
India has consistently maintained its sovereignty over the entire territory, underscoring that both union territories are an inalienable part of the nation. (ANI)
