The Central Government has made strict rules regarding cough syrup. A new amendment has been made in the Drug Rules, 1945 to control the sale of syrup. Under this new rule, consumers will not be able to buy cough syrup from pharmacies without a doctor’s prescription. Monitoring in manufacturing and sales of syrup
After this notification dated June 9, 2026, under the notification amendment, the word “syrup” has also been removed from the drugs listed in Schedule K of the Drugs Rules. Due to this new rule the availability of syrup without prescription has ended. Now cough syrups were being purchased indiscriminately as over the counter medicines but now this will not be possible. Cough pills, tablets or lozenges can still be purchased from medical stores.

These cough syrups were sold a lot
Pharmacies across the country will have to strictly follow the revised rules governing the sale of syrups and related products, issued by Harsh Mangla, Joint Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare. Till now it was very easy to buy cough syrups like Benadryl, Glycodin, Zedex, Tusk DX, Grilinctus, Coffsils, Himalaya Cofflet, Dabur Hanitus etc. from medical stores. You will be able to buy these cough syrups from medical stores only when the doctor writes a prescription to someone. Since strict rules have been made, there will be a decline in the sale of cough syrup which is being sold indiscriminately.
