Till now the common belief has been that men’s sexual desire i.e. sex drive is highest in their 20s. But a new and comprehensive study challenges this thinking. Research shows that the peak of sexual desire in men is not related to age but to physical, mental and emotional maturity.
Interestingly, the sex drive of men is found to be highest in their 40s.
Researchers at Tartu University in Estonia analyzed data from more than 67,000 adults aged 20 to 84 years. According to the study, sexual desire in men increases in their 20s, reaches its peak in the early 40s and gradually decreases after that. The surprising thing is that in many cases even men of 60 years of age feel as sensual as the youth of their 20s.
Different trend among women
In the study, the pattern of sex drive of women was found to be different from that of men. Sexual desire in women is highest between the ages of 20 and 30. After this, it starts declining with increasing age and after 50 it decreases rapidly. Researchers say that biological changes and social responsibilities affect women’s sex drive more.
increased desire despite testosterone
An important aspect of the research is that the level of testosterone hormone in men starts falling after the age of 30. Despite this, sex drive continues to increase for the next 10 to 15 years. Scientists believe that this means that sexual desire is not only related to biology but also to mental balance, self-confidence and depth of relationships.
Effect of maturity of relationships
According to researchers, men in their 40s are more likely to be in long and stable relationships. In such relationships, emotional closeness, trust and communication are better, which promotes sexual activity. This is the reason why men’s sex drive seems to reach its peak in mid-life.
Occupation, satisfaction and children
The study also found that people working in office and sales jobs were the most promiscuous, while machine operators and people associated with the military were less promiscuous. Couples in happy relationships reported greater sexual satisfaction. Having more children was associated with lower sex drive in women, while the opposite effect was seen in men. According to researchers, sexual desire is an important part of human well-being, which is formed by many social and mental factors.
