Story of Nirjala Ekadashi fast
Once Maharishi Vedvyas came to Hastinapur and told the Pandavas the importance of Ekadashi fast. Hearing them, Bhimsen said to Maharishi Vyas, “O grandfather! All my brothers, mother Kunti and Draupadi keep fast on Ekadashi. They ask me to keep fast too, but I cannot remain hungry. I can worship God and donate, but I cannot live without food.”

Vyasji said, “O Bhima! The rule of not eating food on the day of Ekadashi has been mentioned in the scriptures. By this a person attains heaven.”
Bhimsen said, “I cannot live without eating even for a single time. If possible, tell me one such fast, by observing which I can get the results of all the Ekadashis.”
Then Vyasji said, “Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month is called Nirjala Ekadashi. On this day, one should fast without food and water from sunrise till the next day. The person who observes this fast with devotion, gets virtue equal to all the Ekadashis of the year.”
Vyasji told that on this day Lord Vishnu should be worshiped and the mantra “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay” should be chanted. Donating a pitcher filled with water, clothes, food, umbrella etc. to the needy is considered very auspicious. One who fasts on Nirjala Ekadashi, even his biggest sins are destroyed.
After listening to Maharishi Vedvyas, Mahabali Bhima started observing this fast on Nirjala Ekadashi as per the rituals. Due to his observing this fast, this fast got the name Bhimseni Ekadashi. There is a religious belief that the man or woman who observes this fast with devotion and regularly, receives the special blessings of Lord Vishnu.
