It is said in the scriptures that if a devotee cannot fast on Ekadashi throughout the year and observes this fast, then Lord Vishnu gives him full results. At the same time, if the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi is broken unknowingly, then a question arises in the minds of the devotees whether a big problem will arise. Let us know what are the remedies if the fast is broken?

According to Drik Panchang, this time Ekadashi Tithi is starting from 06:12 pm on June 24 and will continue till 8:09 pm on June 25, hence it would be very appropriate to take bath in Brahma Muhurta on the morning of June 25. This Nirjala Ekadashi fast is observed without any kind of food and water.

What to do if the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi is broken?

Along with the scriptures, sages and saints have been saying that God is always hungry for feelings. If a fasting person unknowingly drinks water or eats something during the Ekadashi fast, then it is not considered a deliberate mistake. If the fast is broken then first of all one should seek forgiveness from Lord Vishnu.

  • Devotees should pray to Lord Vishnu that O Lord, I have committed this mistake by mistake, please accept it.
  • After breaking the fast, chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay”.
  • Recite Vishnu Sahasranama or Geeta.
  • Do charity as per your capacity.
  • Maintain virtuous conduct throughout the day.
  • Maintain the spirit of fasting.
  • Do not lie or speak harshly to anyone.

Mythology of Nirjala Ekadashi

According to Drik Panchang, it is also known as Pandav Ekadashi and Bhimseni Ekadashi. Bhimsen, the second brother among the Pandavas, was very fond of eating and drinking and was not able to control his hunger, that is why he was not able to observe Ekadashi fast. Apart from Bhima, other Pandava brothers and Draupadi used to observe all the Ekadashi fasts of the year with full devotion. Bhimsen was worried about his helplessness and weakness. Bhimsen felt that he was disrespecting Lord Vishnu by not observing Ekadashi fast. To overcome this dilemma, Bhimsen went to Maharishi Vyas, then Maharishi Vyas advised Bhimsen to observe Nirjala Ekadashi fast once a year and said that Nirjala Ekadashi is equal to twenty-four Ekadashis of the year. After this mythological story, Nirjala Ekadashi became famous by the names of Bhimseni Ekadashi and Pandava Ekadashi.
