ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Nick Martinez delivered a standout performance against his former team, pitching eight innings to secure a 6-1 victory for the Tampa Bay Rays over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
Martinez, who joined the Rays this offseason on a one-year, $13 million contract, allowed only one run and recorded five strikeouts, helping the Rays end a three-game losing streak and preventing the Reds from extending their six-game winning run.
Rays Capitalize Early
The Rays took control of the game early, capitalizing on a shaky start from Reds pitcher Brandon Williamson. In the second inning, Williamson issued consecutive two-out walks, leading to a three-run inning for Tampa Bay, featuring contributions from Ben Williamson, Chandler Simpson, and Yandy Diaz.
Junior Caminero extended the lead with a home run in the third inning, while Ryan Vilade added another run in the fifth with a single that drove in Diaz, who had a standout game with three hits. Caminero also contributed an additional run in the seventh inning.
Williamson’s Struggles
Williamson’s performance was challenging, as he surrendered five runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings, striking out three while walking three. The Reds’ offense managed to score only once, with Spencer Steer hitting an RBI double in the fifth inning.
Notably, Elly De La Cruz, who had homered twice the previous day, struggled at the plate, finishing 0 for 3. Rookie Sal Stewart, who was tied for the major league lead in RBIs prior to the game, managed to secure one hit.
Upcoming Matchups
Looking ahead, the Reds will send Andrew Abbott (0-2, 5.84) to the mound as they prepare to face Framber Valdez (2-1, 3.30) and the Tigers on Friday. Meanwhile, the Rays will feature Drew Rasmussen (1-0, 2.75) in their matchup against the Twins.
