The first meeting of the new TVK-led alliance was held in Tamil Nadu. Congress President Manickam Tagore said that in the meeting there was discussion on forming a coordination committee, deciding the minimum common agenda and naming the alliance. This alliance includes Congress, VCK, IUML and MDMK.
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [भारत]July 1 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Congress president Manickam Tagore on Wednesday said Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led alliance partners discussed the formation of a coordination committee and have decided on a common minimum agenda and a name for the alliance.
Consensus reached on coordination committee and common agenda
Addressing the joint press conference of TVK, Congress, VCK, IUML and MDMK after the first coordination meeting of the alliance, Manikam Tagore said, “This is the first meeting and it is a good start for our alliance. After 50 days of this TVK government, the first meeting today was positive. We have discussed three things today. We want a coordination committee. We want a common minimum agenda. And we need a name for this alliance.”
TVK may join INDIA block
Tagore also hinted at including TVK in the INDIA block in future. He said, “Whoever has MPs in our alliance will be included in the INDIA alliance. The next meeting will be held soon and it will be announced to all of you.”
The Congress had left the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) in Tamil Nadu and joined hands with the TVK to form the government in the state. Subsequently, the DMK had skipped the INDIA block meeting held on June 8, citing “betrayal” by the Congress. This confrontation had exposed the cracks in the INDIA block. However, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is not part of the opposition alliance, and the DMK had signed the INDIA Bloc’s letter to the Chief Justice of India expressing concern over the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral lists.
MDMK also came together, the alliance showed strength
Meanwhile, leaders of TVK, Congress, VCK, IUML and MDMK displayed their strength in the joint press conference. While Congress, VCK, IUML and Left parties had supported TVK during the floor test, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) is the only party to have recently walked out of the DMK-led alliance.
MDMK chief Vaiko on Saturday announced that his party has decided to support TVK in the upcoming bypolls and local body elections. This show of strength also comes at a crucial time when three people have been arrested in connection with the alleged attempted political horse-trading of TVK MLAs. (ANI)
