Nepal Clarifies No New Restrictions for Indian Tourists Amid Viral Reports

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has pushed back against viral reports claiming that Nepal has introduced new travel restrictions for Indian tourists.

In a statement issued on May 13, the NTB said several media reports and social media posts were spreading “false and misleading” information about travel rules for Indians visiting Nepal.

According to the tourism authority, there are currently no new restrictions on Indian travellers entering Nepal.

What Rumours Were Circulating?

Over the past few days, a lot of online posts on social media claimed that Nepal had:

  • Made identity cards mandatory for Indians crossing the border.
  • Limited Indian tourist stays are limited to 30 days.
  • Introduced penalties or vehicle confiscation for overstays.

The Nepal Tourism Board said all these claims are incorrect. Officials clarified that Nepal has not changed its long-standing open border arrangements with India and has not introduced any new limits on how long Indian tourists can stay.

Nepal Says India-Nepal Travel Rules Remain Unchanged

Nepal and India share one of the most open and unique border systems in the region. Citizens of both countries have traditionally enjoyed easy cross-border movement for tourism, family visits, business, and religious travel.

The tourism board stressed that the relationship between the two countries remains strong and unchanged.

It also urged travellers and media organisations to avoid relying on unverified social media content when checking travel rules.

New Online System Introduced for Vehicles Entering Nepal

While denying the rumours, Nepal also highlighted a recent digital upgrade aimed at making border crossings easier.

The government has introduced a new online system for foreign vehicles entering Nepal through land borders. Under the new setup, travellers can now complete temporary vehicle permits and related payments online before arrival.

The system has been developed by Nepal’s Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance.

Officials say the goal is to reduce delays at border checkpoints and make road travel smoother for visitors arriving in private vehicles.

Important for Indian Travellers Visiting Nepal

For Indian tourists planning a trip to Nepal, the latest clarification means:

  • No new tourist stay limits have been introduced
  • No sudden border restrictions are in place
  • Cross-border travel arrangements remain operational
  • Existing travel rules continue as before

However, travellers should still carry valid identity documents while travelling, especially for flights and hotel check-ins.

Nepal Urges Travellers to Follow Official Updates

The Nepal Tourism Board has requested travellers, tourism businesses, and media outlets to depend only on official government sources for travel updates.

The board also said Nepal remains open, safe, and welcoming for Indian tourists and international visitors.

With the summer travel season approaching and many Indians planning road trips and holidays to Nepal, the clarification is expected to reduce confusion caused by viral misinformation online.
