Nehru was ‘Pakistan’s well-wisher’, Indus Water Treaty ‘anti-India’: BJP | Nehru Was A Pakistan Well Wisher Bjp Slams Indus Waters Treaty

BJP spokesperson Prakash Reddy has described former PM Nehru as a ‘well-wisher of Pakistan’ and the Indus Water Treaty as an ‘anti-India’ decision. He said that PM Modi has already said that blood and water cannot flow together.

Hyderabad (Telangana) [भारत]July 10 (ANI): BJP spokesperson Prakash Reddy on Friday described former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as a “well-wisher of Pakistan” and termed the Indus Water Treaty as an “anti-India decision”. He supported the Centre’s decision to keep the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) suspended. He said the government is committed to making maximum use of water for India and reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that “blood and water cannot flow together.”

Speaking to ANI in Hyderabad, Reddy also criticized the 1960 treaty and alleged that it was not in India’s interest. Reddy said, “At the time of Operation Sindoor, the Prime Minister had made it clear that blood and water cannot flow together. This is a decision taken by the Prime Minister. And this is not just an issue of blood; the Indus Water Treaty, especially with regard to the Jhelum water, is an anti-India decision… During Nehru’s time, perhaps there was an inclination towards Pakistan; maybe he was a well-wisher of Pakistan. On the issue of Jhelum water and Indus river water, Nehru agreed with Pakistan. Now, the Indian government is very clear. The Government of India will try to bring maximum water to Indian soil…”

Foreign Ministry also reiterated its stand

His statement comes days after India reiterated that the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan will remain suspended until Islamabad credibly and permanently ends its support for cross-border terrorism. Addressing a weekly media briefing on July 3, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India’s position on the treaty remains unchanged. Jaiswal had said, “India’s position on the Indus Water Treaty is consistent. The IWT is suspended in response to Pakistan’s continued sponsorship of cross-border terrorism. Pakistan must credibly and permanently renounce its support for cross-border terrorism.”

Earlier, on June 5, Jaiswal had said that the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 would remain suspended after the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025.

Court of Arbitration’s decision rejected

The Ministry of External Affairs also rejected the May 15, 2026 decision, which it described as the decision of an “illegally constituted” Court of Arbitration on maximum water storage and interpretation of the treaty. The ministry said India has never recognized that court and considers all its proceedings and judgments as “null and void”.

Gates of Baglihar Dam were opened

Meanwhile, on July 6, authorities opened three gates of Baglihar Dam in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir as the water level of Chenab river rose significantly due to incessant rains in the Doda-Kishtwar region. The administration said it is continuously monitoring the weather conditions and river flow, and all concerned departments are on alert.

What is Indus Water Treaty?

The Indus Waters Treaty, signed between India and Pakistan in 1960, regulates the sharing of the waters of the Indus River system. Under the treaty, India has exclusive rights to the eastern rivers – Ravi, Sutlej and Beas – while Pakistan gets the waters of the western rivers – Indus, Jhelum and Chenab. India also enjoys limited rights over the western rivers for specified domestic uses, agriculture and run-of-the-river hydroelectric projects under the treaty. (ANI)
