Rahul-Priyanka met injured students, Congress demanded apology from PM
New Delhi [भारत]July 21 (ANI): Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and KC Venugopal on Tuesday met student protesters injured in police action during the CJP Parliament march in the national capital. Congress has demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it “barbarity” against the youth of the country.
The party said the demand of the protesting students is simple: the Center should take responsibility for the alleged NEET paper leak and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should immediately resign. Rahul’s allegation regarding discussion in Parliament
The visit to the hospital came after Rahul Gandhi spoke to reporters at the Parliament House complex, where he said, “This issue is of students, of the future of the youth. And what is being done – people are being beaten – it is completely un-Indian. Modi ji has not even apologized for what happened yesterday.”
Gandhi also said he had met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla along with other opposition MPs earlier in the day to press for a discussion on the issue in Parliament, but was told that the Speaker would first need the government’s consent.
He alleged, “‘We went to the Speaker and said, ‘Look, we want to discuss the students’ issue,’ and the Speaker told us that to discuss it he would have to ask the government. Do you understand what that means? The Speaker is telling us that to debate in Parliament he will have to take permission from the government,” he alleged.
Other opposition leaders also condemned
The criticism from Congress joins a wave of widespread opposition criticism of the government’s handling of the protests, with leaders including Pawan Kheda, Shashi Tharoor, Sanjay Raut, Bhupesh Baghel and Arvind Kejriwal speaking out against the police action over the past two days.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police has said that more than 118 policemen have been injured. Many protesters are also reported injured. Union Health Minister JP Nadda and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal also visited RML Hospital separately on Tuesday. Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is leading a long hunger strike demanding Pradhan’s resignation, is under medical observation at Safdarjung Hospital. (ANI)
