Julian Weber’s withdrawal has dramatically changed the complexion of the men’s javelin throw at the Lausanne Diamond League 2026. With the European champion out of the competition, the battle at Athletissima on August 21 is suddenly wide open and several of the world’s biggest names will be eager to take advantage.
Weber would have arrived as one of the biggest threats after his stunning 90.40m winning throw in Birmingham, a performance that underlined his ability to produce massive distances when the pressure is at its highest. His absence removes one of the most dangerous late-round competitors from the field.
His replacement, Pan American silver medallist Marc Anthony Minichiello, adds another intriguing element to an already stacked contest. For Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra, Weber’s withdrawal could prove significant.
The 28-year-old athlete from Haryana is still searching for his first international title since July 2025, and Weber could have been one of the men standing between Chopra and victory. With the German no longer in the field, Chopra has one less major obstacle to overcome as he looks to rediscover his winning touch.
Chopra showed encouraging signs at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he produced an 85.83m throw to win silver. After a lengthy injury lay-off, the Olympic and former world champion appears to be steadily building his rhythm. Lausanne, however, presents a much tougher challenge.
The fast runway at the Stade de la Pontaise has traditionally provided javelin throwers with an excellent platform to attack big distances. Chopra will need to be sharp from his opening attempts if he wants to challenge for the top spot. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters also finds himself in an interesting position.
With Weber out, Peters can concentrate on the two men who could set the pace Neeraj and, most importantly, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage.
Pathirage has been one of the standout throwers of the season and enters Lausanne with extraordinary momentum. His 92.67m throw in Rome has established him as the benchmark in the field, while his Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow further demonstrated his ability to deliver on the biggest stage. If Pathirage finds his rhythm early, the rest of the field could be forced into a battle simply to stay within striking distance.
On current form, Pathirage looks like the clear favourite. The Sri Lankan rising star has combined enormous distance with remarkable consistency throughout the season. His 92m-plus effort in Rome has placed him in a different category, and his Commonwealth Games triumph has only strengthened his confidence. That means Neeraj and Peters cannot afford to wait too long for their biggest throws.
A strong opening attempt could be crucial in Lausanne, particularly if Pathirage produces another huge effort early in the competition. Weber’s withdrawal may have changed the dynamics, but it certainly hasn’t weakened the field.
Alongside Chopra, Peters and Pathirage, Lausanne will feature a host of experienced big-game performers, including 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott, 2025 World Champion Jakub Vadlejch, and late addition Artur Felfner.
With Diamond League points also at stake ahead of the season finale, every throw will carry extra significance. The result could come down to a fascinating battle between Pathirage’s explosive current form, Peters’ championship pedigree and Chopra’s ability to produce his best when the pressure rises.
For Chopra, Lausanne represents more than just another Diamond League appearance. It is another opportunity to prove that he is once again ready to compete at the very top following his injury struggles. His 85.83m in Glasgow suggested that his confidence and physical condition are moving in the right direction. But against a thrower like Pathirage, 85m may not be enough.
Chopra will likely need something much closer to his best to challenge for victory on Friday. With Weber no longer standing in his way, the spotlight is firmly on the Indian superstar.
