Nayla Grewal, known for her role in the film “Thappad,” is passionate about participating in stories that raise crucial societal questions. She believes that cinema should consistently spotlight women’s issues. In a recent conversation, she stated that when films portray women’s lives, struggles, and rights, it sparks necessary discussions within society.
Grewal expressed her commitment to this cause, saying, “Women’s issues hold significant importance for me. I am quite aware of this subject and wish to work on films that thoroughly explore women’s concerns. In recent years, there has been a noticeable decline in such films, and we are not seeing enough significant narratives about women’s issues as we used to.”
During the discussion, she praised her “Thappad” co-star Taapsee Pannu, highlighting the film’s focus on domestic violence and respect in relationships. “I consider myself fortunate to have worked on a film like ‘Thappad.’ Directed by Anubhav Sinha, it addressed critical issues surrounding domestic violence and equality,” Grewal noted. She acknowledged Pannu’s efforts in tackling women’s issues through her film choices.
Grewal also mentioned Pannu’s upcoming film “Gandhari,” which addresses child trafficking. She emphasized the importance of films that bring women’s issues to the forefront. “I want to be part of films that promote this thinking and compel audiences to reflect on these issues,” she added.
Furthermore, Grewal stressed the responsibility women have to support one another. “Women should uplift each other and create opportunities for advancement. If women do not support one another, who will initiate this change? This is not just about the film industry; it is a collective responsibility to foster a better environment for women in society,” she asserted.
She concluded by stating that creating films about essential women’s issues should not solely focus on box office numbers. “The significance of such stories far outweighs their earnings. The question should not be about which male star is in the film or its box office potential. If the story is important, it deserves to be told.”
