Bangladesh cricketer Nayeem Hasan has accused the police of assault in Chattogram. Naeem says that when he was returning home in an auto-rickshaw, the police stopped him without any reason, beat him and tried to take him to the police station.
Chattogram: Bangladesh national cricketer and spinner Nayeem Hasan has accused the police officers of brutally assaulting him. This incident happened in Chattogram on Friday night. After this incident, there is a lot of anger in the Bangladesh cricket world and people are condemning this action of the police. Bangladesh Cricket Board has demanded a complete investigation into the matter. Naeem Hasan, 25, was returning home in an auto-rickshaw from Dhaka airport after the end of Prime Bank Cricket Club’s match in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League.
Police stopped his car near Lalkhan Bazar area of Chattogram. However, Naeem did not play in this match. Naeem alleged that the police treated him badly without any reason. The police officers held his neck and tried to force him into another auto-rickshaw and take him to the police station. Nayeem told that the people present with him and the local people told the police that he is a national cricketer of Bangladesh, but the police did not listen to them.
“I repeatedly told them who I was, but they were not ready to listen,” Naeem told the media. They beat me badly with sticks and plastic pipes. Later, when I reached the police station and officially introduced myself, the station in-charge asked me to look down and talk.” Naeem questioned the police action and asked that if they were real policemen, then why were they trying to take him in a CNG auto-rickshaw instead of their official vehicle? He has demanded a fair investigation in this matter.
Meanwhile, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Amirul Islam has given his reaction on the matter. He has assured that the initial investigation has revealed the mistakes of the police officers and strict action will be taken against the culprits. Naeem was released by the police early Saturday morning. The Bangladesh cricket community has unanimously condemned this incident. Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim supported Naeem and said that this excess cannot be tolerated at all and should be properly investigated.
Nayeem Hasan made his debut in 2018 and has since played 14 Test matches for Bangladesh. Nayeem has also been included in the 15-member Bangladesh squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe later this month.
