Salaam Mumbai
Now a political controversy has started regarding the ‘Salaam Mumbai’ message shown on the screen during the IPL telecast. Mumbai President of Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha Deepak Singh has written a letter to Mumbai Cricket Association President Ajinkya Naik demanding to display ‘Namaskar Mumbai’ or ‘Namaste Mumbai’ instead of ‘Salaam Mumbai’.
Deepak Singh has said in his letter that Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra and the cultural identity here is linked to Marathi tradition and identity. In such a situation, instead of words like ‘Salaam Mumbai’, words like ‘Namaskar Mumbai’ and ‘Namaste Mumbai’ should be used. He said that the language, glorious culture and traditions of Maharashtra should be respected on every public platform. According to him, the words Namaskar and Namaste better represent the social and cultural sentiments of Maharashtra than Salaam.
Mumbai named after Mumba Devi
It is also mentioned in the letter that Mumbai is named after Mumba Devi, hence the identity of the city should be presented in its original cultural context. Deepak Singh demanded that in future during IPL or other cricket matches, telecasting of messages like Salaam Mumbai should be stopped and in its place messages like Namaskar Mumbai, Namaste Mumbai or Jai Maharashtra should be given priority. BJYM expects the Mumbai Cricket Association to take this issue seriously and stop broadcasting such messages in future.
Political interference is not necessary in sports
At the same time, Congress party leader and Maharashtra Vice President Muzaffar Hussain has opposed this demand of BJP. He said that Mumbai is a cosmopolitan city and its culture has been a symbol of Ganga-Jamuni culture. In such a situation, it is not appropriate to make such a demand. Muzaffar Hussain said that BCCI and Mumbai Cricket Association are independent organizations and they have the right to take their own decisions. There should be no political interference in this.
