A shocking case of dowry harassment has come to light in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. Here, when the daughter-in-law did not bring a quilt in dowry to her in-laws’ house, her mother-in-law stopped her honeymoon. The victim has complained about this to the SP. After this, the matter reached the family counseling center. The counselors of the counseling center were also shocked to hear the victim’s story.
A girl from Masauli police station area of Barabanki was married to a young man working on contract in a government hospital in Lucknow. This marriage took place on 25 February 2024. The girl told that her father has passed away. Her mother and brothers had given a lot of things in dowry.
According to the young woman, when she reached her in-laws house after the wedding, her mother-in-law’s behaviour towards her seemed a bit rude. On the first day at her in-laws house, she sat alone on the second floor of the house till 10 pm. No one even offered her tea or water. She went downstairs and asked her mother-in-law for her room. Her mother-in-law told her the room, but there was no quilt in the room. It was winter in February. Therefore, it was necessary to have a quilt in the room while sleeping.
‘My mother-in-law’s behavior was not good from the first day at my in-laws’ house’
The girl said that she asked her mother-in-law why there was no quilt in the room, and she said that your mother and brothers have not given a quilt in dowry, so sleep without one. Then she asked for the sheet in which the breakfast items were tied, and her mother-in-law said take this as it is from your maternal home. The girl said that her husband brought a quilt at midnight. He said go to sleep, we will talk tomorrow. Her husband bringing the quilt was a little soothing. She fell asleep due to tiredness. On the second and third day too her husband slept with her, but there was no suhag night.
The girl told her pain
According to the young woman, on the fourth day, her husband went to his elder brother’s house in the neighborhood. He returned after four days, but still there was no Suhagrat. After this, when the husband left for duty, the mother-in-law asked, did you both not celebrate Suhagrat? The daughter-in-law said, you ask your son. The mother-in-law laughed out loud and said, I know, my son will not do anything without my consent. Then making her sit beside her, the mother-in-law said, if your mother had given a TV, then both of us, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, would have sat and watched. She did not even give us saris with five parchans. This has caused us a lot of humiliation. We are all very angry about all these things. That is why we were not allowed to celebrate Suhagrat.
According to the girl, somehow after 15 days she came to her mother’s house with her brother. She called her husband to call him back during Navratri, but he did not come. After all the efforts to convince her failed, she gave an application to the SP. When her husband was asked, he also said that his mother did not give him the quilt and other dowry items and told the reason for his anger.
Husband said- I don’t want to live with you anymore
At the same time, the husband says that he will now end this relationship. But the girl has said that she wants to forget the past and start a new relationship. Then counselors Sanjeev Mishra, Amrita Sharma and KN Tiwari gave the husband and wife some time to sit separately and talk. After this, the young man asked for a week’s time to think. But the lady police station in-charge Munni Singh gave him two days’ time. After this, she said that a case will be registered and action will be taken.
