If you have booked the ticket through IRCTC website or app, then you do not need to go anywhere or fill any form.
1. Wait for automatic cancellation
In this condition the Railways itself cancels. As soon as the Railways marks the train as ‘Cancelled’, your ticket gets automatically canceled in the system. You do not have to click on the ‘Cancel Ticket’ button yourself.
2.Check Refund Account
Your money will be returned to the same account (bank account, credit card, or UPI) from which you made the payment. Usually it takes 3 to 7 days.
What not to do if the train is cancelled?
If the train has been canceled by the Railways, then do not make the mistake of canceling the ticket yourself. If you press the cancel button yourself, the Railways’ normal cancellation charge may be deducted. In such a situation, it is best to wait.

Many times the train is not cancelled, rather its route is changed. If you do not want to travel due to changed route, then you will have to file TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt).
How to file TDR from mobile
- Login to IRCTC app or website and go to ‘My Booked Ticket’.
- Select your train ticket for which you did not travel.
- Select ‘File TDR’ from the options given there.
- Select Reason, like ‘Train Diverted And Passenger Not Travelling’ or ‘Train Running Late More Than 3 Hours’.
- After doing this, Railways will verify your request and within a few days the entire money will be credited to your account.
