Mumbai (Maharashtra) [भारत]July 6 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that a compensation of Rs 4 lakh will be given to the families of those who died in the collapse of two to three slums within a “ground-plus-three” structure in Mankhurd’s Janata Nagar. This information was given by Minister of State Girish Mahajan on Monday.

Speaking to reporters, Mahajan said that six people, including four children and two adults, lost their lives in the incident, and that there would be a thorough investigation into how the building came to be. Mahajan said, “This building collapsed due to continuous heavy rains that have been lashing Mumbai and its outskirts since yesterday and this morning. There were six people inside the building – four children and two adults – and all six people have lost their lives. Municipal Corporation, police and NDRF teams are present at the spot and working. I do not think anyone else was involved except these six people.”

Compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the deceased

Mahajan said the collapsed structure was in a slum. “It is a slum area where structures have been built… However, the entire building has collapsed due to heavy rains. A thorough investigation will be conducted into how the building was constructed, why it was built that way, and whether necessary permissions were given,” he said. He further said, “The CM has announced that the government will provide a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of each deceased.”

The tragedy occurred amid continuous heavy rains that have been lashing Mumbai and its suburbs for the past few days.

NDRF launched rescue operation

Speaking on the incident, NDRF Assistant Commandant Sarang Kurve said, “We received information from the BMC control room at 9:30 pm; our Andheri team reached in about 35 minutes, and our Kurla team reached the site in about 20 to 25 minutes. There are no injuries here right now. All six victims have been evacuated and have been admitted to a nearby hospital. About 45 of our rescue personnel are present here, and they are continuously carrying out rescue operations. The structure is complex, and the weather conditions were working against us; however, our rescuers are well trained to deal with such situations, and we are working continuously to complete the operation.”

Abu Azmi raised questions on the government

Maharashtra Samajwadi Party President Abu Azmi targeted the government over the construction of slums here and questioned its legality. (ANI)
