What is the importance of Muharram?
Muharram is one of the four holy months of Islam. In this month the Muslim community especially pays attention to worship, fasting, dua and noble deeds. For the Shia Muslim community, this month symbolizes sorrow and remembrance of martyrdom. On the day of Ashura, the sacrifice of Imam Hussain is remembered and Majlis, processions and religious programs are organized at many places.
When is Yaum-e-Ashura?
The new Islamic year 1448 Hijri has started from 17 June 2026. According to this, the tenth day of Muharram will be on Friday, June 26. That means, there is a possibility of celebrating Yaum-e-Ashura on this day. There may be slight variations in the dates locally depending on the sighting of the moon. In most parts of India, Muharram processions will be taken out on June 26 only.
What was the incident of Karbala?
In the year 680 AD, Hazrat Imam Hussain and his supporters faced the army of the cruel ruler Yazid in the Karbala region of Iraq. Imam Hussain refused to bow before injustice and tyranny. Despite being very small in numbers, they did not leave the side of truth and justice. It is said that on 10 Muharram, Imam Hussain along with his family and 72 companions were martyred in the field of Karbala. His martyrdom is considered an example of sacrifice, courage and struggle for truth in Islamic history.
