Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu won gold at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. This is his third consecutive CWG gold. She made a record in the women’s 48 kg category and gave India its first gold medal of the Games.

Mirabai Chanu scored a hat-trick of gold

Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu won her third Commonwealth Games gold medal by lifting 105 kg in the clean and jerk category of the women’s 48 kg final at Glasgow 2026, also giving India its first gold medal of the Games. Chanu had earlier won gold medals in the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Chanu, who had earlier set a Commonwealth record by lifting 85 kg in the snatch, started the clean and jerk section with an unsuccessful attempt of 82 kg. He came back in his second attempt and successfully lifted 82 kg, followed by another impressive performance by lifting 85 kg in his third attempt, setting a new Games and Commonwealth record.

Chanu then attempted 105 kg and successfully lifted it above her head, thereby ensuring the gold medal and completing a hat-trick of gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.

With this win, Chanu added another gold medal to her previous Commonwealth Games triumphs in 2018 and 2022. India also won its first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Games.

Rishikant Singh missed the gold medal

Earlier in the day, Indian weightlifter Chanambam Rishikant Singh ended his campaign with a total of 264 kg (121 kg snatch + 143 kg clean & jerk), while Malaysia’s Mohd Anik Kasdan won the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record lift of 273 kg (121 kg snatch + 152 kg clean & jerk). According to ESPN, Kenya’s Joshua Mboya took the bronze medal with a lift of 260 kg (115 kg + 145 kg).

The Indian lifter started strong in the snatch, successfully lifting 116kg and then improved it to 119kg. In his final attempt, Rishikant broke the Commonwealth Games snatch record by lifting 121 kg and set a new personal best. However, Kasdan equaled the 121 kg effort moments later, leaving both lifters tied on top after the initial discipline.

In clean and jerk, Rishikant made a safe start with a successful attempt of 143 kg and temporarily took the lead with a total of 264 kg. Kasdan responded by lifting 145 kg and then 149 kg and went ahead with 270 kg, putting the pressure back on the Indian.

Needing 151kg in his final attempt to take the lead, Rishikant completed the clean but was unable to lock out the jerk, ending his challenge for the gold. Kasdan then finished his impressive performance by lifting 152 kg in his final clean and jerk attempt, setting a Games record with 273 kg. (ANI)
