Now recently, a media report has revealed that 84 lakh air conditioners were sold in 2021-22, which increased to 1.1 crore in 2023-24. The government is working on a new scheme to deal with this challenge, the aim of this new scheme is that people should remove their old and power consumption AC and buy models with 5 star ratings. Doing this will also benefit people, AC with 5 star rating will reduce electricity consumption every month, which will reduce electricity bills. Not only the electricity bill but the pressure on the power grid will be reduced.
According to the report by The Business Standard, the scheme is being prepared by the Ministry of Power and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. The purpose of this scheme is to match with a long term scheme like India Cooling Action Plan. Under this scheme, there is also talk of giving many benefits to people, so that more and more people can take advantage of this scheme.

- Return AC to recycle: Submit the old air conditioner to the certified recycling center and you can get the benefit of exemption on purchasing a new AC by taking a certificate.
- Benefits of exemption: Large brands like Blue Star, Voltas, LG can give customers the benefit of discount on buying a new AC in exchange for old AC.
- Advantage of exemption in electricity bill: The government is considering giving exemption in electricity bills to customers who buy new AC with electricity distribution companies.
According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, AC with a 5 -star rating in lieu of old AC can save Rs 6300 in the electricity bill on an annual basis. This will not only reduce the burden on people’s pockets, but can also see a decrease in pressure on the power grid.

Such a scheme is already running for people living in Delhi, a scheme is being run by BSES under which after giving an old 3 star rating AC, when people buy a new AC with 5 star ratings, you can take advantage of up to 60 per cent discount on the new AC, but the condition is so that AC should be in the condition and 3 units can be replaced with per CA number.
