Meta is building its 33rd data center in Canada and its first in the country. There will be an investment of more than $13 billion on this AI-optimized center being built in Alberta. This will create more than 3000 construction and 300 operational jobs.
California [अमेरिका]July 11 (ANI): Meta is building its first data center in Canada. The 1 GW AI-optimized facility, to be built in Sturgeon County, Alberta, is the company’s 33rd data center globally.
In a recent announcement, Meta said the project will involve an investment of more than 13 billion Canadian dollars and is designed to power its AI innovations and core products used by billions of people around the world. The company hopes that this construction will generate large scale employment at the local level. Approximately 3,000 construction workers will be on site at the peak of construction, and upon completion the facility will support more than 300 operational jobs.
Commitment to local community
In addition to data centers, Meta is also committed to local infrastructure. The company said it would invest approximately 60 million Canadian dollars in local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water infrastructure. It will also launch annual ‘Data Center Community Action Grants’ to provide direct funding to local nonprofits in the region.
Energy and Grid Infrastructure
Meta said it covers the entire cost of the energy consumption of its data centers so that there is no negative impact on consumers, and funds new and upgraded infrastructure. For Alberta, the company worked with Greenlight Limited Partnership, Alta Link, Capital Power and Alberta Electric System Operator to plan energy needs several years in advance.
Meta said it is fully funding the new generation and grid infrastructure to support the Sturgeon County site, which will improve reliability across the Alberta grid and benefit all consumers. Like all of Meta’s data centers, power usage at this facility will be fueled by 100% clean and renewable energy.
Water use and conservation planning
The company said it is designing the site in a way that minimizes water use. The Sturgeon data center will feature a water-saving closed-loop, liquid-cooled system using dry cooling technology, meaning no operational water is used in the cooling system. On-site water use will be limited to household purposes, fire protection and equipment maintenance.
Meta also said it covers the full cost of water and wastewater service required for its data centers, and discloses annual water withdrawals and energy use at sustainability.atmeta.com. The company aims to become ‘water positive’ by 2030, meaning it aims to restore more water than it consumes wherever Meta has operations globally.
“We are excited to call Sturgeon County home to our newest data center, and look forward to working with and positively contributing to the local community,” Meta said. (ANI)
