Santosh Iyer, MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, spoke on the topic ‘Driving a Billion Aspiration’. He said that we have reached the sales figure of 20,000 luxury cars in India. This shows that there has been a big change regarding luxury lifestyle in India. He laid emphasis on the production of electric cars.
Per capita income increased in India
Santosh Iyer said that if we look at the markets of other countries, 2,00,000-3,00,000 luxury cars are being sold there. India is the third largest automobile market in the world. Every year 45 lakh passenger cars are produced here.
In comparison to Germany, infrastructure is developing faster in India. Just as there has been a change in development, similarly we are also seeing a change in the aspirations of the people. Per capita income in India has reached $3,000.
Focus will be on electric cars
In a country like India, not only buying a luxury car but buying a car is a luxury in itself. In India there are about 40 cars per thousand people, while in Germany there are 600 cars per thousand people. Germany and India have been working together for a long time. Both the countries will work together in future also to fulfill the aspirations of the people.
Talking about the EV segment, Iyer said that electrification should be promoted in luxury cars also. Mercedes will also focus on the production of electric cars.
First Indian CEO of Mercedes India
Santosh Iyer is the first MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India. He joined Mercedes-Benz in 2009. After holding various important positions in the company, he was appointed MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India in January 2023. Before joining Mercedes-Benz, Iyer also worked at Ford Motor and Toyota Kirloskar.
