MDMK chief Vaiko met Sonia Gandhi and announced support to INDIA block. After leaving DMK and joining hands with TVK in Tamil Nadu, Vaiko said that MDMK is with the Congress alliance.
New Delhi [भारत]July 14 (ANI): Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko met the Congress leadership at the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi at 10, Janpath. During this, he expressed his support to the Congress-led INDIA block at the Center ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament.
Let us tell you that MDMK had broken its long alliance with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and joined hands with Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) camp in post-poll politics in Tamil Nadu.
courtesy call
After the meeting with the Congress leadership in Delhi, Vaiko told ANI, “It was just a courtesy meeting. I am with the Congress, MDMK is with the Congress alliance.” When asked about MDMK’s stance on the three-language policy, he said, “We have always opposed the three-language formula from the beginning. We will never accept it.”
Political equation changed in Tamil Nadu
Following the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, in which the Vijay-led TVK emerged as the largest party, the MDMK was among the parties, including the Congress, that left the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and joined hands with Vijay. Since then, Vaiko has said that he will stand as a “shield” to protect Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay from political attacks by the opposition, while also accusing the DMK of targeting him for supporting the ruling TVK government.
MDMK has one MP in the Lok Sabha, Durai Vaiko.
The monsoon session of Parliament, starting from July 20, will be the first session after the Congress left the DMK. DMK did not even attend the INDIA block meeting last month.
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan had said that the party would continue its friendship with the DMK, despite his party’s MLA Vanni Arasu being in the Vijay-led cabinet. Thirumavalavan had called on all regional parties in Tamil Nadu, including TVK and DMK, to join hands against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). (ANI)
