India batter Mayank Agarwal has signed a short-term deal with Durham and will feature in the final four County Championship fixtures of the season, bolstering the Division Two leaders’ push for promotion.
The 35-year-old will join Durham for the closing phase of the campaign after South Africa batter David Bedingham returned home ahead of his country’s international red-ball season. Agarwal is expected to slot into Durham’s top order, with the club beginning its final stretch against Northamptonshire.
“We are delighted to have Mayank joining us for our County Championship run-in,” Durham head coach Ryan Campbell said. “With David Bedingham returning to South Africa ahead of their international red-ball summer, it was important we acted by recruiting a high-class international cricketer for the remainder of the season.”
Mayank Agarwal Returns To County Cricket
The Durham stint will be Agarwal’s second spell in the County Championship after he represented Yorkshire during the closing stages of the 2025 season.
Agarwal played three matches for Yorkshire and endured a slow start, registering two ducks in his first three innings. He finished his stint in emphatic fashion, however, scoring 175 against Durham in his final appearance.
The right-hander has extensive first-class experience and is closing in on 9,000 career runs, with 21 centuries to his name.
India Career And Recent Form
Agarwal has played 21 Tests and five ODIs for India, scoring 1,488 Test runs at international level. His Test career includes four centuries, with a career-best 243 against Bangladesh in Indore in 2019.
His last appearance for India came more than four years ago, but he has remained a regular in domestic cricket for Karnataka.
Agarwal was also part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL title-winning squad in 2025, joining the team as a late replacement for the injured Devdutt Padikkal.
Durham Target Promotion
Durham currently sit at the top of the County Championship Division Two table and have brought in Agarwal with promotion firmly in their sights.
“Mayank is a hugely talented batter who has a superb first-class record,” Campbell said. “We look forward to him contributing to Durham as we look to secure our return to Division One of the County Championship.”
Agarwal’s experience in English conditions and his substantial first-class record make him a timely addition for Durham as the county enters the decisive final phase of the season.
