Japan has not done this for the first time. In 1986, the import of Indian mangoes was banned after cases of fruit fly infestation were reported. After this this ban continued for 20 years. Then testing conducted in June 2006 confirmed that Indian mangoes are not at risk of diseases and pests. After this, Japan again started buying Indian mangoes. Now the ban has once again refreshed the old story. Why did Japan ban Indian mango?
The Economic Times report claims that before the mangoes are exported, a team from Japan comes and inspects them. The vapor here checks the heat treatment. This is a method in which it is seen that the mangoes are not affected by pesticides and have not been cooked with chemicals. This year when the team reached Rahmanpur in Uttar Pradesh for investigation and found many shortcomings.

Yokohama Plant Protection Association, a Japanese organization, has issued a notification saying that consignments of mangoes with certificates issued by India on or after March 25, 2025, will not be accepted. The organization has also said that imports of Indian mangoes will remain halted until Tokyo officials confirm that standards have improved.
Indian mangoes are in great demand in Japan. In the year 2025, Tokyo had imported Indian mangoes worth 1.5 million dollars. The maximum quantity in this was of Kesar variety mangoes from Gujarat. Their price was 02 lakh dollars.

Thailand, Taiwan, Mexico supply mangoes. Now Pakistan and Vietnam have also started exporting mangoes here. Taiwan has also sent a large consignment of mangoes to Tokyo.

The announcement made by Japan to stop Indian mangoes is a big blow in many ways. Firstly, exporters say that although Japan is not the biggest buyer of mangoes, the trade has suffered due to the tensions in West Asia. The weather shock proved to increase tension for the crop and Japan’s decision, together, have proved bad for the mango trade. There was a decline of 30 percent in exports. After this, getting such a ban is a big shock.
The storm and rain that have already damaged the crop in the beginning of summer have dealt a blow to the mango business, which was estimated to be worth $56 million in 2025.
