According to Mahabharata, King Pandu had 2 wives – Kunti and Madri. Nakul and Sahadev were the children of Madri. Shalya was the king of Madra country and he was the brother of Madri. Thus the king became known as the maternal uncle of all the Pandavas along with Shalya, Nakul and Sahadev. King Shalya loved his nephews very much, so when he came to know that there was going to be a war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, he left for Kurukshetra to join this war.

King Shalya felt that the Pandavas had made arrangements to welcome him. But this arrangement was made by Duryodhana.
